Blueprint. How To Measure Your Room

Step 1: Grab a tape measure, some paper, and a pencil. If you like to be neat, you can use a ruler but it's not essential.

Step 2: On the paper, roughly sketch out the shape of your room. Don't worry - it doesn't need to be to scale.

Step 3: Measure each wall from corner to corner and record the measurements on your drawing. Record all measurments in millimeters.

Step 4: Now, add in a bit more detail. Measure and note on the drawing details such as the location & height of any openings or protrusions in the room(doorways, bookcases, fireplaces, built-ins, niches etc). Please also show the direction that any doors open.

STEP 5: Also measure and note the location & height of any windows.

Step 6: Measure and record the ceiling height.

Step 7: Finally, if you are up for more measuring, it would be really helpful to Blueprint to also note the location of power outlets, light switches and light fixtures.

Step 8: Scan and email or fax the drawings to Blueprint.

That's it! When you've finished you should have something like the sketches to the right.

HINTs & TIPS

  1. Don't worry about your drawing skills. The important thing is that your measurements are accurate.
  2. For Steps 4, 5 & 6 you can also do an elevation drawing like the one shown on the left. This helps to minimise the amount of information on one drawing.
  3. When measuring things like doors & windows, measure from the outside edges of the trim.
  4. Be sure to include the measurements of any pieces of furniture/art that you'd like to keep and have incorporated.
